The stain used is a traditional water based stain made from walnut husks available as crystals. When the chair was made they probably dipped the whole chair in a tank of it.

This old Captains Chair in Beech with an Elm seat needed new arms and 3 new spindles. Now ready for stain and finish.

I am making some traditional steam bent Ash mast hoops for a Lowestoft smack Excelsior. These attach the sail to the mast.
